Overall Objectives

This module aims to provide course participants with an understanding of the role of finance in business. It will help the course participants to analyze a business’s financial needs, identify viable sources of financing, evaluate alternative sources of finance, and make decisions about how to deploy and manage funds in an organisation. The module will also focus on the different financial decisions that an organisation needs to undergo which in turn can have an effect on its operations.

By the end of this module, the learner will be able to:

  • Create finance resources to be used during the lesson.
  • Guide the course participants in knowing which source of finance is more suited than others for a business.
  • Collaborate to decide what type of finance is needed according to a particular scenario.
  • Discuss what finance is.
  • explain the basic instruments of funding.
  • Distinguish between Internal, External, Long term, Short term sources of finance.
  • Analyse sources of finance – advantages and disadvantages.
  • Describe Financial Markets.
  • Analyse the participants, operations and characteristics of the equity, bond, futures and options markets
  • Identify the uses and value of types of finance.
  • Distinguish between different financial markets and the range of participants there is.

Applying knowledge and understanding

The learner will be able to:

  • explain business finance and financial instruments used by businesses to students.
  • Draw on their knowledge to build lesson plans and create resources.
  • Prepare case studies for class use.
  • Understand finance and finance instruments
  • Demonstrate an appreciation of the role of accounting information, and the need for finance

This module will be assessed through: Forum Participation, Assignment, Essay and Portfolio.
