Overall Objectives and Outcomes

Workplace learning offers the opportunity for learners to learn through acquisition and participation. In particular, within communities of practice individuals learn essential skills and competencies  through collaboration, problem-solving, observation and critical thinking. The aim of this module is to provide educators with a real experience in the world of work with the objective of provide a work exposure within an area of their choice. 

This module will cover theories of workbased learning and will focus on experiential learning and communities of practice. The essential knowledge associated with this domain will be covered through a blended learning approach with the application of the flipped classroom method. In addition, learners will also be equipped to transmit achieved skills within their classroom.

By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:

Competences

a. Apply work-based learning techniques in a real work setting;

b. Critically analyse the skill needs of a workplace;

c. Investigate the essential factors for working effectively in a team.

Knowledge 

a. Understand the theory of workplace learning;

b. Master concepts and techniques related to experiential learning;

c. Deploy facilitation methods in education and training;

d. Comprehend concepts of Non-formal learning and tacit knowledge;

e. Appreciate and understand the different typologies of learning;

f. Critically evaluate the concept of zone of proximal development and communities of practice;

g. Understand the concept of mentorship and the role of the mentor in workplace learning.


Skills

a. Identify skill needs in the workplace;

b. Evaluate factors that contribute to learning within a workplace context;

c. Reflect on their own practice as educators.

Assessment Methods

This module will be assessed through Placement and Reflective Journal.
