The Geographical Aspect of Europe

Overall Objectives and Outcomes

This module will identify Europe’s geographical aspect, highlighting its physical features including oceans, seas, rivers, mountain chains, plains, islands and mainland Europe. It will also underline how different places have different geographical features and how the latter influence the lifestyle of the people residing within a particular area. The different types of climate in Europe will also be identified as well as the effect of climate and pollution on water supply, agriculture, transportation and the economy. Particular reference will be made to climate change and energy as one of the targets of the Europe 2020 Strategy.

By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:

Competences

a. Identify Europe’s geographical features, such as its rivers, mountain chains and islands, as well as its physical boundaries;
b. Establish ways in which the different geographical features of European countries influence the lifestyle of the people residing within those countries;
c. Analyse the effect of climate on water supply, agriculture, transportation and the economy.

Knowledge 

a. Identify different types of climates within Europe and the effect of climate on water supply, agriculture, transportation and the economy;
b. Understand the difference between human and physical geographical aspects across differentEuropean countries;
c. Recognise the main environmental changes which occurred in Europe;
d. Recognise possible environmental damage and find ways and solutions to minimise environmental problems. 

Skills

a. Identify and understand the main effects of climate on water supply, agriculture, transportation and the economy;
b. Determine the main physical and human geographical characteristics of European countries;
c. Show the importance the EU is giving to climate change by making reference to the Europe 2020 Strategy.
