Caring for Babies and Children

Overall Objectives and Outcomes

The aim of this unit is to provide educators with the skills and knowledge to support their students to understand the health and social care needs of babies and children and to encourage them to show awareness on the different types of services that can be offered to meet a child’s personal care needs. The process from conception to birth and the first years of life is a crucial period of child’s development. Course participants will be expected to describe the following areas of development and in the holistic development of a child (physical development; social and emotional development; gross and fine motor development; intellectual development; nutrition needs).

By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:

Competences

a. Create play sessions to stimulate intellectual and communication skills in babies;
b. Create play sessions to stimulate intellectual and communication skills in children;
c. Adapt theories of child development to practice;
d. Monitor milestones in child development;
e. Monitor procedures in taking care of babies and children such as feeding and changing.  

Knowledge 

a. Identify the differences in types of nutrition in babies;
b. Identify the differences between motor skills development;
c. Describe the communication milestones in babies and children;
d. Describe the development in babies from 0 to 5 years;
e. Describe the development in children from 6 to 13 years;
f. Describe the interaction between theories of development to practice in caring for babies and children;
g. Identify ways how to take care of a baby’s personal care needs;
h. Identify ways how to take care of a child’s personal care needs;
i. Identify the delayed milestones in babies;
j. Describe the effects of delayed milestones in the activities of daily living of babies and children;
k. Outline the care needed to meet the needs of babies and children with delayed milestones.

a. Show a link between theories of development in babies and children and practical aspects of caring for babies;
b. Demonstrate knowledge of physical development in babies and children;
c. Demonstrate knowledge of emotional development in babies and children;
d. Demonstrate knowledge of social development in babies and children;
e. Demonstrate knowledge of communication development in babies and children;
f. Demonstrate knowledge of motor development in babies and children;
g. Demonstrate knowledge of intellectual development in babies and children;
h. Identify steps and procedures in caring for children from 6 to 13 years;
i. Identify steps and procedures in caring for babies (washing, feeding, handling);
j. Demonstrate knowledge of physical, social and emotional, communication, motor and intellectual development in babies and children.
