Overall Objectives

This module aims to introduce course participants to different lighting techniques used in photography and media. They will acquire the skills to manage a variety of lighting scenarios within media and photography contexts. By obtaining the necessary skills the course participants will be able to carry out a task from ideation to completion, using the correct lighting techniques necessary for the project.

By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:

a. Complete a project with correct lighting setup for photography / moving image;
b. Produce a project using the right camera settings;
c. Collaborate with a team to produce both still and moving images;
d. Prepare correct equipment for task at hand;
e. Ensure correct lighting techniques for different scenarios;
f. Create a series of images and moving images making use of both natural and artificial lighting;
g. Manage variety of light sources for photography and moving image.

a. Identify a variety of lighting setups for still and moving image, such as high key and low key lighting;
b. Describe a variety of lighting techniques to produce a series of still images and moving image;
c. Define different visual language tools;
d. Illustrate the ability to identify different lighting equipment;
e. Illustrate the use of three point lighting;
f. Explain the different uses of lighting equipment;
g. Describe a variety of light modifiers used in photography and moving image.

a. Evaluate different lighting setups and their use, such as three point lighting;
b. Compare different lighting scenarios;
c. Measure light available and alter camera settings accordingly to achieve a good exposure;
d. Demostrate the ability to post-process images and moving image using industry standard software;
e. Establish a clear work flow for still images and moving image;
f. Use a variety of light sources to provide different narratives through light.

This module will be assessed through: Sketchbook, Presentation, Assignment.
