Sewing Machinery for Fashion

Overall Objectives and Outcomes

This unit will allow learners to consolidate their knowledge in the operation of machinery available in workshops. Attention will be given to health and safety regulations to self, others, equipment and materials being used. They will have the opportunity to practice tasks using the resources made available in the workshops. This will enable them to extend and apply this knowledge to their students.

Identify sewing machines and their functions, with attention to eliminate risks and hazards in machinery and equipment in the workshop
Thread the sewing machine-upper and bottom threads
Identify different sewing machines’ attachments and needles and their uses
The overlock machine/ the blind stich machine – threading, using and cleaning
The Embroidery machine – threading, using and cleaning

By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:

Competences

a. Develop a comprehensive understanding of quality production when using diverse sewing machines and their related tools and attachments;
b. Develop an ability to handle and operate diverse sewing equipment and related tools and attachments following standard procedures of health and safety;
c. Develop an ability to maintain diverse sewing equipment and related tools and attachments following standard procedures of health and safety;
d. Interpret designs using software for the embroidery machine

Knowledge

a. Identify the different sewing machines and equipment available in the workshop, including their functions, and the health and safety precautions;
b. Identify the possible risks and hazards when handling the machinery;
c. Describe how to thread and prepare the machinery for use;
d. Relate the functions of the various machinery attachments, gadgets and needle types for various projects and fabrics;
e. Demonstrate knowledge of the threading of the overlock machine (3 or 5 threads) – operation and cleaning;
f. Explain the operations of the Embroidery machine and the software. Threading, using and transforming files into embroidery patterns.

Skills

a. Operate machinery observing health and safety regulations;
b. Demonstrate the functions of various machinery attachments and Gadgets;
c. Distinguish the various needle types for the specific machines, fabric types and thread thickness;
d. Operate the overlock machine and solve problems while working;
e. Translate images into embroidery patterns, relating software and practical work;
f. Support students to operate diverse sewing machinery found in the workshop and observe Health and Safety regulations;
g. Assemble diverse machinery attachments and gadgets of machinery for specific tasks and support students in machine operation;
h. Choose appropriate needles for specific machinery, fabrics and threads and tasks;
i. Assess students when threading and operating the overlock machine;
j. Explain the process of transforming images into embroidery patterns and execute into designs for fashion;
k. Critique own work reflecting on the design, materials, production and finishing as well as suggest possible modifications for improvement.

Assessment Methods
