Sewing and Creative Techniques in Fashion

Overall Objectives and Outcomes

This unit will guide course participants to develop theoretic and practical competences in sewing techniques for the fashion context. Participants will learn sewing techniques in both creative and functional specifications. Safe working practices will be discussed and demonstrated to learners. The tutor will support learners in acquiring knowledge and competence in a variety of techniques for the creation of complex sewing samples and creative techniques. Learners will experiment with a variety of fabric properties and textiles materials to create exciting test pieces for fashion design. Items to be covered include: 

  • Identify and apply hand sewing techniques in garment production; 
  • Explore and review creative sewing techniques applied in fashion design; 
  • Manipulate textiles fabric to create 3D effects in fashion design; 
  • Develop different components and fasteners used in garments; 
  • Explore constructional techniques (macramé, crochet, knitting); 
  • Create deigns suitable for creative surface design work; 
  • Critically evaluate own and others’ work and find solutions; 
  • Communicate specialist working techniques to an audience.

By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:

Competences

a. Engage with literature to develop an ability to create different sewing techniques;
b. Develop an ability to research and create creative sewing techniques applied in fashion design;
c. Develop ability to use suitable construction processes and techniques according to the type of fabric, style and fashion;
d. Develop a comprehensive knowledge of different components which are used in garment production;
e. Engage with literature to develop an ability to explore and produce different constructional techniques (e.g. macramé, crochet, knitting);
f. Create designs for techniques suitable for fashion surface designs;
g. Critically evaluate clothing constructional work providing recommendations for improvement;
h. Recommend specific working techniques and procedures for fashion design. 

 

Knowledge 

a. Identify and explain sewing techniques in garment production using hand and machine sewing;
b. Describe different creative sewing techniques applied in fashion design;
c. Describe the manipulation of fabric to create 3D effects in fashion design;
d. Outline different components and fasteners used in garments;
e. Select constructional techniques (macramé, crochet, knitting) used in fashion design;
f. Recognise competent work practices of own and others’ work;
g. Define the process of creative sewing techniques applied in fashion.

a. Research and review others’ work and generate designs for creative surface designs for fashion;
b. Demonstrate hand sewing techniques in garment production;
c. Exhibit how to apply creative sewing techniques in fashion design;
d. Manipulate textiles fabric to create 3D effects in fashion design;
e. Construct pieces of Macramé`, Knitting and Crochet;
f. Show how to solve problems encountered during the working process;
g. Indicate modifications in own and others’ work and rewrite work process;
h. Schedule and demonstrate specialist working techniques to an audience;
i. Recommend and support hand sewing techniques in garment production;
j. Design and produce creative sewing techniques in fashion design;
k. Choose and relate how to create 3D effects in fashion design;
l. Categorise and generate different components and fasteners used in garments;
m. Construct different techniques used in fashion design;
n. Analyse, Classify and Evaluate own and peer constructional work;
o. Formulate and support specialist working techniques to an audience.  

 

Assessment Methods
