Overall Objectives and Outcomes

The practicum is intended for course participants to apply and practice the skills and knowledge they are learning throughout the programme. The field supervisor will allot clients to the course participants according to guidance by the practicum coordinators taking into consideration the current procedures of the service. The field supervisor must ensure that the course participants practice the skills learnt during the placement.

By the end of this module, the learner will be able to:

Competences

a. Administer, score and interpret the BAS Battery Test;

b. Administer, score and interpret literacy assessments;

c. Collaborate well with colleagues, peers and superiors;

d. Collaborate with schools, with other professionals and guardians;

e. Develop empathy and assertive skills when working with clients;

f. Carry out Clinical Interviews and Class Observations;

g. Carry out basic therapeutic sessions;

h. Be responsible in producing case notes, taking relevant notes and keeping files in general according to the organization’s standards;

i. Conduct assigned work ethically and responsibly.

Knowledge 

a. Demonstrate knowledge of relevant theories related to intelligence, learning difficulties, assessing and intervening with clients and interpreting psychological testing;

b. Recall standard procedures for administering and interpreting BAS Battery Test and literacy assessments;

c. Demonstrate knowledge of software required in administering and scoring of tests;

d. Develop awareness of the Education System and its policies.

Skills

a. Practice use of relevant theories of intelligence, learning difficulties, assessing and intervening with clients, and interpreting psychological testing;

b. Apply standard procedures to administer and interpret the BAS Battery Test;

c. Apply standard procedures to administer and interpret literacy assessments;

d. Build a good rapport with clients;

e. Maintain files according to the standards and practice of the service;

f. Carry out classroom observation and gather information from schools and parents;

g. Show sensitivity to students, parents, teachers and community coming from a diverse background;

h. Show proficiency in inter-personal skills with colleagues and other professionals.

Assessment Methods

This module will be assessed through: Continuous Assessment by field supervisor and practicum coordinator together with a Portfolio.
