Child and Adolescent Mental Health
This module will cover the use of International Diagnostic Manuals for Mental Disorders, namely DSM and ICD, the use of a Multi-Axis Diagnosis. It will cover mental disorders present in childhood and adolescence which were not covered in previous modules; like, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychotic disorders and eating disorders. It will also cover the topics of suicide intent, suicide ideation, death wishes and self-harm.The module will also provide course participants with an understanding of the interplay between neurological processes and mental health.
By the end of this module, the learner will be able to:
a. Ensure the detection of mental disorders in children and adolescents;
b. Ensure the proper identification of the symptoms of anxiety (general anxiety, social anxiety, performance anxiety, separation anxiety), OCD, PTSD, Phobia (including school phobia), depression, psychosis, eating disorders;
c. Be responsible to carry out a suicide risk assessment;
d. Carry out a Multiaxial Diagnosis following differential diagnosis;
e. Evaluate the influence of neurological factors on cognitive, emotional, and behavioural processes;
f. Administer and interpret neuropsychological assessments to evaluate cognitive functions.
a. Acquire and develop the necessary knowledge about the two main classifications of mental disorders namely latest editions of ICD and DSM;
b. Outline symptoms of the different mental disorders mentioned above;
c. Recall the etiology and prevalence of mental disorders;
d. Develop knowledge to identify the differences between suicide intent, suicide ideation, death wishes and self-harm;
e. Describe the multi-axial diagnosis system;
f. Explain the basic principles of neurological psychology;
g. Describe the structural and functional components of the central nervous system.
a. Differentiate between a mental disorder and a group of symptoms;
b. Diagnose mental disorders when present, comorbidity and differential diagnosis;
c. Carry out a suicidal risk assessment;
d. Apply the multi-axial system;
e. Examine how alterations in brain structures can impact behavior and cognitive processes.
This module will be assessed through: Assignment based on case studie/s.
