A Critical Study of English Language Teaching (ELT)

Overall Objectives and Outcomes

This module provides the pedagogical background in the teaching, learning and assessment of the English language. Course participants will systematically explore the key issues behind instructional methodology in the teaching and learning of listening, reading, speaking and writing skills, vocabulary and grammar. Course participants will apply knowledge of second language acquisition and the curriculum to identify learning and assessment strategies which suit different learners. Course participants will apply theoretical knowledge and carry out small-scale research to find solutions to genuine English language teaching and assessment problems.

By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:

Competences

a. Critically evaluate literature and research on different strategies used in the teaching, learning and assessment of grammar, vocabulary, receptive and productive skills;

b. Reflect on personal learning strategies and beliefs on the teaching of ELT;

c. Evaluate prior professional practice in the light of current theories and practices on ELT;

d. Implement current research on learning styles and learners;

e. Create different assessment strategies according to students’ abilities.

Knowledge 

a. Describe the English language curriculum, pedagogy and assessment methods to gain a better insight in the challenges faced by the ESL learner;

b. Explain different research conducted on the different roles of the teacher and classroom management in ELT;

c. Identify different pedagogical and assessment options for teaching grammar, vocabulary, receptive and productive skills, including TBL, the Lexical approach and CLT;

d. Describe the implications of all the above for lesson planning, instructional practice and assessment.


Skills

a. Apply learning and reflection to familiar professional contexts;

b. Plan, design and evaluate language learning material and assessment methods for different learners and learning contexts;

c. Demonstrate critical awareness of ELT challenges and recommend solutions.

Assessment Methods

This module will be assessed through: Practical Tasks and Online Forum.
