Literature in the ELT Classroom
This module investigates the role of literature in ELT as a vital component of English language teaching in secondary schools. Course participants will explore prose, drama, poetry and short stories within both the canon and popular culture to identify their linguistic and literary contribution to the ELT classroom. Course participants will apply this knowledge to design instructional material for their educational context.
By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:
a. Reflect on personal beliefs and professional practices in the light of current theories and practices on teaching literature in ELT;
b. Plan literature lessons using prose, drama, poetry, short stories within both the canon and popular culture;
c. Guide critical studies and discussion on the potential of a number of literary texts, including; classics, graded readers and contemporary literature;
d. Use a range of media, ICT and interactive teaching strategies in the teaching of literature in ELT.
a. Describe what constitutes literature and why it is used in ELT;
b. Critically evaluate literature, research and current practices on teaching literature in ELT.
a. Use a variety of media to stimulate interest in literature;
b. Implement different learning strategies during literature lessons to expose learners to contextualized language;
c. Create instructional material and recommend activities that complement the literary texts and cater for different learners.
This module will be assessed through: Assignment and Project.
