Education for Sustainable Development: EkoSkola and Out –of-Class Activities

Overall Objectives and Outcomes

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is one of the cross-curricular themes listed in the National Curriculum Framework (NCF). The module is intended to familiarize teachers with the principles of ESD and how to identify opportunities for cross-curricularity. During the module, learners will be familiarized with the Eko-Skola programme (that has been identified by UNESCO as the largest international ESD movement) and the opportunities it provides to implement ESD as a whole school approach. One of the objectives of ESD (and of the NCF) is the development of the school-community interface. The module will also provide teachers with skills on how to plan out-of-class activities that familiarize students with community resources. 

By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:

Competences

a. Produce lesson plans that address ESD themes;
b. Carry out a curriculum audit to identify ESD-based themes within the syllabi of different subject area;
c. Collaborate with other colleagues in the setting up (or consolidation) of the EkoSkola programme in his/her respective school;
d. Carry out an audit of the community to identify ESD resources that can be used in out-of-classactivities.

Knowledge

a. The principles of ESD and the implications to the educational system;
b. The principles of cross-curricularity;
c. The 7-step methodology of the EkoSkola programme;
d. The benefits of out-of-class activities for the holistic development of learners.

Skills

a. Discern what constitutes ESD and select appropriate/relevant themes;
b. Prepare cross-curricular learning material;
c. Support students in the running of the EkoSkola programme;
d. Design out-of-class activities that valorise the ESD potential of community resources.

Assessment Methods

This programme adopts continuous and summative methods of assessment including assignments, online tasks, reflective journals, projects and video presentations. For further details, kindly refer to the Teaching, Learning and Assessment Policy and Procedures.
