Overall Objectives and Outcomes

This module will provide course participants with the skills and competences required to carry out a clinical interview and basic therapy sessions. The emphasis of this module will be on clinical interviewing, building rapport with one’s clients, progressing in therapy, how to provide feedback, appropriate self-disclosure, and challenging blind-spots and maladaptive perspectives of clients. This is based primarily on the Egan Model of Counselling.

By the end of this module, the learner will be able to:

  • Ensure mastery of the Egan Model of Counselling;
  • Foster a good and empathic rapport with clients which supports them in overcoming their struggles;
  • Apply effective clinical interviewing techniques including various modes of questioning and listening skills;
  • Carry out basic therapy sessions which explore the client’s struggles, offering feedback and challenging their blind spots in order to help them to arrive at a resolution;
  • Conduct a clinical interview which explores the clients challenges, difficulties, developmental history, psycho-social and family issues;
  • Identify different approaches to build and maintain rapport with clients such as the Rogerian appraoch, the proficiency in actve listening and the proper use of empathy, pacing the client.;
  • Explain the different elements of the NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) Model such as mirroring, sensory acuity, and being fully present with the client;
  • Explain the difference between various types of clinical interviews and their use;
  • Demonstrate the ability of carrying out a semi-structured interview while maintaining rapport with the interviewee;
  • Describe the benefits and challenges of using the Egan Model;
  • Describe different theories and models that make up well planned clinical interviewing techniques;
  • Carry out a therapy session utilizing the Egan Model;
  • Demonstrate appropriate rapport and apply empathic skills when conducting a therapy session;
  • Give feedback and challenge blind-spots without losing rapport with the client;
  • Communicate effectively the clinical interview results to the clients, families and other professionals;
  • Conclude a therapy session using appropriate skills such as summarizing, giving food-for thought and providing hope.

This module will be assessed through: Practical Task and Write-up.
