Programme Description

Throughout this programme, participants will develop their professional knowledge and competencies in several psychological assessments, their interpretations and therapeutic intervention skills. Through supervised placements participants will be supported to apply, practice and consolidate theories and techniques learnt throughout the programme. Moreover, the course will also give particular focus to the personal and social competences required to work as a psychologist with and within the school system.

Entry Requirements

1) A Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) (MQF Level 6, minimum 180 ECTS) with a minimum of a classification of Second Class Honours (Second Upper) or an comparable qualification deemed equivalent by the Institute for Education;

OR

2) A Bachelor’s degree with Psychology as a main area of study (MQF Level 6, minimum 180 ECTS) with a minimum of a classification of Second Class Honours (Second Upper) together with a Higher Diploma in Psychology (MQF Level 5, minimum 60 ECTS) with a minimum of a classification of Merit, or equivalent.

Overall Objectives and Outcomes

By the end of this programme, the learner will be able to:

    1. Apply therapeutic skills and techniques with children and adolescents passing through emotional difficulties and challenging situations such as bereavement and trauma;
    2. Administer psychometric tests while maintaining the motivation of the client and preserving a therapeutic relationship;
    3. Manage and deal with crises situations;
    4. Write concise and comprehensive reports;
    5. Reflect on how own personality, and past and current experiences influence own work;
    6. Reflect about one’s practice and personal development in relation to client work, dynamics and general practice;
    7. Keep abreast of relevant and new policies and guidelines in the Education System.

Mode of Delivery

This programme adopts a blended approach to teaching and learning. The online approach may be either synchronous and asynchronous sessions. Lectures are held either online or at the Institute for Education.

The language of instruction and assessment is English.

Assessment Methods

This programme adopts continuous and summative methods of assessment including assignments, online and/or reflective tasks, portfolios, reflective journals and presentations. Participants will also need to successfully pass three (3) practicums. Certification

Upon successful completion of this programme, course participants will be conferred a Master of Psychology in Child and Educational Psychology and recognised by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority.

Further Career and Learning Opportunities

This course is recognised by the Malta Psychology Professions Board and serves as part of the requirements to work as an educational psychologist. It may also provide access to further studies at MQF Level 8.
