Programme Description

This programme is targeted towards educators who wish to enhance their skills, competences, and overall professional practices through a flexible study approach. A selection of different modules are offered on the programme that cover various themes that best suit course participants’ interests and which can enhance their educational practice.. This programme also aims to support the educators and the learners in their own o obtain the Master’s degree, course participants need to complete two research components consisting of the ‘Research Strategies’ module and the Dissertation. These modules are integral for the development and implementation of evidence-based professional education practices.

By the end of this programme, educators will have developed key competences such as responsibility and autonomy, enabling them to take initiative and make informed decisions in their professional practices. Additionally, the course participants will strengthen their critical qualities such as reflective thinking, effective collaboration, and ethical judgement. These attributes are particularly vital for navigating complex educational environments, promoting inclusivity, and driving innovation in teaching and learning.

Entry Requirements

Applicants applying for the course are to be in possession of one of the following:

a) A Bachelor’s degree in Education (MQF Level 6 with a minimum of 180 ECTS, or equivalent) together with relevant experience in an educational setting;

b) A Bachelor’s degree (MQF Level 6 with a minimum of 180 ECTS, or equivalent) and PGCE (or equivalent) together with relevant experience in an educational setting;

c) A Bachelor’s degree in Inclusive Education (MQF Level 6 with a minimum of 180 ECTS, or equivalent) together with 3 years’ relevant experience in an educational setting;

d) A Master’s Degree (MQF Level 7 with a minimum of 90 ECTS, or equivalent) and a Permanent Teacher’s Warrant together with relevant experience in an educational setting.

Modules are offered on a rotation basis where you can apply to any number of modules available each year, including the summer months, across the 3 to 5 year duration of the programme (see full list of modules). Course participants will need to complete 60 ECTS worth of modules before commencing the Research Component.

Research Component

Course participants will have the opportunity to progress from Postgraduate Diploma to Master’s degree provided the following conditions are met:

  1. A minimum of 60 ECTS in MAPP modules;
    and
  2. An overall average of 65% in MAPP modules.

Course participants accepted to complete the Master’s degree are to successfully complete the following modules.

Course participants are responsible to ensure that they successfully complete the Research Component by the end of their fifth academic year enrolled on the programme.

Identifying your Professional Needs

A strategic individual professional development plan empowers educators to take control of their growth journey, align their goals with the institution’s objectives, and develop targeted skills that enhance their effectiveness in the classroom and wider educational community.

Scheduling of Modules

Whilst every effort is made to ensure module dates do not clash with other modules, course participants are responsible to consult with published dates to successfully attend all sessions.

Minimum ECTS per Academic Year

It is recommended that course participants successfully complete a minimum of 20 ECTS per academic year to ensure they have the opportunity to complete the full Master’s degree within the 5-year time-frame.

Research Component

It is recommended that course participants obtain 60 ECTS in modules by the end of their 3rd Academic Year enrolled on the programme. The Research Components ought to commence in their 4th year to ensure that they complete the dissertation within the 5-year time-frame.

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply contemporary educational theory and policies relevant to professional practice within the educational context.
  2. Critically reflect on the educational practices and their success in engaging learners, safeguarding the rights, and promote wellbeing of the individuals.
  3. Transform the professional practices to promote the development and independence of the learners.
  4. Implement effective classroom management strategies that promote positive behaviour, inclusion, engagement, and learning.
  5. Utilise and adapt research methodology to address issues related to the educational context.
  6. Facilitate group activities and projects that promote collaborative strategies to foster teamwork and communication among colleagues and learners.
  7. Utilise digital tools and resources that enhance the academic and professional practices in today’s educational setting.
  8. Integrate technology-enhanced learning and digital resources within the educational context.

This programme adopts a blended approach to teaching and learning, approximately 75% will be delivered online and 25% face-to-face. The online approach may be either synchronous and asynchronous sessions. For further details, kindly refer to the Teaching, Learning and Assessment Policy and Procedures. The language of instruction and assessment is English with the exception of Maltese used in modules specific to the Maltese language or as otherwise prescribed. ​

Lectures are held either online or at the Institute for Education and/or workshops/sports grounds of licensed compulsory education schools or premises.

This programme adopts continuous and summative methods of assessment including assignments, online tasks, portfolios, reflective journals, projects and presentations. Course participants will be asked to submit the assessment tasks for each module.

Upon successful completion of this programme, course participants will be conferred a Master of Arts in Professional Practices. This programme is accredited and recognised by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority at MQF Level 7, 90 ECTS.

Participants are also offered the opportunity to exit the programme following successful completion of the required ECTS credits.

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practices in Education (MQF 7, 30 ECTS)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Practices in Education (MQF 7, 60 ECTS).

This course is designed to enhance educators’ professional growth and career progression. This may support career advancement into leadership, specialist, or advisory roles. It may also provide access to further studies at MQF Level 8.

Applications for the Master of Arts in Professional Practices in Education open mid-May of each year with modules commencing in September.

When open, interested applicants may apply through the Institute for Education’s online portal: https://ife.portal.gov.mt/programme/apply 

Applicants are required to submit an application under the Master of Art Professional Practices and Education as well as separate applications for the various micro-credential awards forming part of this programme.

Non-EU/EEA course participants who intend to move to Malta for study reasons, for the duration of the programme, require an authorisation from Identity Malta Agency in order to be able to study locally.

Following acceptance on this programme, applicants will be required to pay an administrative enrollment fee of 50 Euro.

Tuition fees for modules will be charged on modular-basis. For further details, kindly refer to the respective tuition fee for MAPP modules offered as Stand-Alone micro-credential Awards.

Tuition fees for Research Components (Research Strategies Module and Dissertation Module) will be charged on an annual rate of 1050 Euro per academic year until successful completion of the programme.
