Programme Description

This programme is targeted towards individuals who wish to enhance their skills and competences in pedagogy. The target audience is either qualified individuals wishing to join the education sector or persons already within the education sector who need to follow an initial teacher-training course. It aims to equip participants with the necessary tools and competences to teach effectively in the 21st century classroom whilst fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for learning.

By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:

Competences

  1. Critique and adapt relevant educational theory, practice and policy.
  2. Plan and manage strategies at classroom and school level to enhance the learning experience of students.
  3. Implement assessment strategies which coach and support learners through self and peer assessment.
  4. Critically evaluate personal practice and make judgment in ones’ professional capacity to address complex and unfamiliar contexts within the educational setting.
  5. Initiate projects and communication that promote collaboration with other educators, the senior management team, and stakeholders in education to enhance the learning community.
  6. Conduct educational research to address identified areas of study relevant to ones personal context.

Knowledge

  1. Demonstrate specialised theoretical and practical knowledge underpinning own professional practice.
  2. Exhibit a critical understanding of teaching methodologies and reform strategies that engage and support learners.
  3. Identify assessment strategies which promote learner motivation and self-esteem as well as create a positive attitude towards the school environment.
  4. Systematically establish ethical and social issues which contribute to the provision of an education for all.
  5. Critically appraise research methodologies that may be utilised as a tool for analysing the educational context and addressing issues of direct relevance to own professional practice.

Skills

  1. Apply educational theory and policies relevant to professional practice.
  2. Reflect on practices and their success in engaging learners and addressing the needs of individuals within the classroom.
  3. Transform teaching practices which scaffold learning, and consider ethical and social issues.
  4. Devise valid and reliable methods of assessment which contribute towards learner development.
  5. Utilise and adapt research methodology to address issues related to the educational context.

This programme adopts a blended approach to teaching and learning, 50% will be delivered online and 50% face-to-face. The online approach may be either synchronous and asynchronous sessions. The language of instruction and assessment is English with the exception of Maltese used in modules specific to the Maltese language or as otherwise prescribed.​

Lectures are held either online or at the Institute for Education and/or workshops/sports grounds of licensed compulsory education schools or premises. The teaching practice module will be delivered at licensed, compulsory education schools.

This programme adopts continuous and summative methods of assessment including assignments, online tasks, portfolios, reflective journals, projects and presentations. Participants will also need to successfully pass two (2) teaching practices. Upon successful completion of this programme, course participants will be conferred a Master of Education and recognised by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority.

Participants are also offered the opportunity to exit the programme with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (60 ECTS) following successful completion of the required credits.

This course is recognised by the Council for the Teaching Profession and serves as part of the requirements to apply for the position of regular teacher. It may also provide access to further studies at MQF Level 8.

Non-EU/EEA course participants who intend to move to Malta for study reasons, for the duration of the programme, require an authorisation from Identity Malta in order to be able to study locally.
