Exploring Leadership for Learning in the Implementation of the Montessori Approach in a Gozitan Junior School: A Case Study

Susanna Azzopardi is a Senior Lecturer in Initial Teacher Training at the Institute for Education and a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership at the University of Malta. With extensive experience as a teacher, Assistant Head, and Head of School for 13 years, she is passionate about leadership that empowers educators and fosters thriving learning environments. She believes strong leadership is key to inspiring both teachers and students.

This qualitative case study explores how leadership supports the implementation and sustainability of the Montessori approach in a junior school in Gozo, Malta. Using interviews and observation, it examines leadership practices, collaboration with Montessori experts, and contextual factors influencing change. Thematic analysis will identify patterns in leadership, philosophy, and challenges, offering insights for school leaders and policymakers on fostering innovative, child centered, and holistic learning environments.
