Developing Self-Expression through the Creative Arts in the Primary Classroom
The nature and purpose of this module is to highlight the importance of self-expression through the creative arts amongst children at a primary level. To be able to encourage prospective primary teachers to embrace creativity as part of their day-to-day teaching and learning experiences, three main questions outline this course
By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:
a. Develop creative activities which target creativity and problem solving at appropriate level.
b. Make use of group discussions and class reviews as an idea generation activity amongst the
learning group.
c. Develop different modes of assessment in the creative arts activities according to level.
d. Create and organise creative work and processes.
a. Understand the different stages of a child’s development in relation to creative skills and selfexpression.
b. Demonstrate a growing confidence and competence in the creative arts teaching at a primary level.
c. Understand appropriate methods of creating cross-curricular lesson plans.
d. Identify appropriate resources to support creative arts teaching.
e. Demonstrate understanding of the learning outcomes framework.
The learner will be able to:
a. Display different methods of engaging learners in a range of creative processes and interdisciplinary
activities.
b. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of self-expression through the creative arts
amongst children at a primary level.
c. Plan lessons and applications according to subject knowledge and understanding.
d. Show ability to introduce children to creative expressions with an awareness and understanding of
their varied needs and learning processes
This module will be assessed through: Presentation and Peer Feedback; Assignment.
