Teaching Through Anxiety: Educator Perspectives and the Teacher’s Role in Fostering Mental Wellness in the Classroom

Stephanie Palmieri is a Learning Support Educator with over 20 years of experience in state and church schools. She holds a BA (Hons) in Inclusive Education and is dedicated to creating supportive, inclusive learning environments. Passionate about educational equity and student well being, she aims to further her studies in inclusive education to strengthen her expertise and contribute to more accessible and equitable educational systems.

This study investigates how Maltese teachers perceive and respond to student anxiety, highlighting their role in supporting mental well being. Using surveys and interviews, it found teachers often identify visible symptoms like exam stress but overlook internalised signs. Limited training and inconsistent support lead to varied responses. The study calls for professional development, clearer intervention protocols, and stronger mental health services to create emotionally safe, inclusive school environments.
