A probing Study of GE and ESD in a Small Island State

Mark Mifsud is a Chartered Biologist, Environmental Scientist, and Science Teacher with over 28 years of experience in environmental science, education, and sustainable development. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, he is Professor and outgoing Director of the Centre for Environmental Education and Research at the University of Malta. He coordinates postgraduate programmes in sustainable education and contributes to EU projects, policy development, and international committees on environmental education.

This study examines Global Education (GE) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Malta through policy review, stakeholder consultations, and a national survey. Findings reveal that while GE elements appear in ESD initiatives, these are mostly environmental, with limited social or cultural focus. Conceptual overlaps hinder implementation. The forthcoming national ESD Strategy could provide a foundation for integration, supported by stronger collaboration among educators, policymakers, universities, and civil society.
