Overall Objectives and Outcomes

This module is designed to give candidates knowledge and the necessary skills to be able to incorporate injury prevention into their methodology and that they will be able to develop an understanding of sports medicine and its role within society.

By the end of this module, the learner will be able to:

Competences

  • Critically evaluate and detail knowledge at the forefront of the field of sports medicine;
  • Devise projects which incorporate knowledge of injury prevention;
  • Analyze and assess potential risk factors contributing to sports injuries;
  • Implement effective injury prevention strategies, incorporating warm-up and cool-down routines;
  • Create different fitness assessments in order to identify students’ strengths and weaknesses.

Knowledge 

  • Categorize common sports injuries, including strains, sprains, fractures, dislocations, and contusions, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the anatomical structures involved;
  • Explain the relationship between sports medicine and athletes’ health;
  • Display a firm grounding in injury prevention principles and its relationship with sports medicine;
  • Describe key concepts and encourage the use of safe practices in class.

Skills

  • Devise and sustain arguments for and against current trends in sports medicine;
  • Integrate safety measures into coaching practices to minimize injury risks;
  • Demonstrate the proper use of protective equipment whilst emphasizing the importance of its role in injury prevention;
  • Develop lesson plans including injury prevention for specific sports or physical activities.
