Overall Objectives and Outcomes

The course participants will be exposed to the major running event in athletics (sprinting, middle distance, hurdles, and relays). They will acquire the necessary theoretical and practical skills to adapt the teaching methods of these events to children of different ages. The learners will become aware of the importance of teaching the skills, techniques, and conditioning for all the events to young children at different stages.

By the end of this module, the learner will be able to:

Competences

  • apply the principles of training when teaching athletics to children.
  • demonstrate a proper technique in the majority of the events.
  • adapt the lesson plans to the learners’ needs and level of cognitive and physical maturity.
  • adapt lesson plans based on the physical environment, facilities, and equipment available.

Knowledge 

  • demonstrate an understanding of the biomechanical aspects of the various athletics events.
  • identify the factors affecting the performance in different athletics events.
  • examine the components of fitness required for each athletic event.
  • identify and work on limiting factors that affect performance in various athletics disciplines.

Skills

  • demonstrate a proper technique when teaching an event.
  • choose the appropriate method of teaching an event.
  • identify and correct common mistakes in execution of different techniques.

 

Assessment Methods

This module will be assessed through: Practical Assignment and Presentation.
