Assessing Ethics through the Learning Outcomes Framework

Overall Objectives and Outcomes

Ethics in schools is assessed via the Outcomes Learning Framework at all stages – the primary, middle and secondary school years. Students are assessed by continuous assessment in the years 4, 5 and 6.  A new SEC syllabus has been written in line with the Learning Outcomes Framework. This module will introduce prospective and current Ethics teachers to the Malta Qualifications Framework and the Learning Outcomes Framework. They will also be introduced to various theories of assessment, and the different modes of assessment via which teachers can assess the effectiveness of their teaching. 

By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:

Competences

a. Demonstrate knowledge of the Malta Qualifications Framework and the Learning Outcomes Framework;

b. Critically engage with research literature related to theories of assessment;

c.  Evaluate how assessment frameworks influence the teaching and learning process;

d. Evaluate strategies for assessing students according to the Learning Outcomes Framework.


Knowledge 

a. Identify appropriate methods for assessing the Ethics Learning Outcomes;

b. Analyse the assessment methods in order to determine which of them are the most reliable and valid;

c. Extend knowledge of theories of assessment and learning and the Learning Outcomes Framework for Ethics.


Skills

a. Reflect upon the best assessment modes to assess Ethics in the primary and secondary classroom;

b. Identify the validity and reliability of the assessment criteria;

c. Grade essays and reflective writing tasks;

d. Design task, rubrics and tests for the assessment of Ethics;

e. Design assessment tasks, rubrics and tests to assess Ethics in the secondary classroom;

f. Design assessment tasks and rubrics to assess Ethics in the primary classroom;

g. Evaluate current assessment practices in the teaching of Ethics.

Assessment Methods

This module will be assessed through: Presentation; Practical Task.
