Overall Objectives and Outcomes

This module will allow learners to develop the necessary skills to draft patterns competently and understand the role this plays in the design and production of the fashion industry. Learners will be taught how to produce patterns and understand the terminology related to pattern drafting. Learners will be able to construct basic pattern blocks and recognise construction lines, pattern markings and dart manipulation. Learners will learn relevant sizing and grading information. This unit will give students the underpinning knowledge in pattern drafting and grading as well as become aware of the need for accuracy when drafting patterns as this is a main process in the production chain. 

By the end of this programme, participants should be able to:

Competences

a. Categorise important body measurements and size charts;
b. Describe how to draft basic blocks for a skirt, trousers, block bodice and sleeve;
c. Determine stylish patterns from various standard blocks / commercial patterns;
d. Paraphrase adaptations to patterns for a variation of styles;
e. Define how to grade patterns form a master block to larger/smaller sizes.

Knowledge

a. List in sequence the body measurements and match to size charts;
b. Learn how to draft basic blocks for a skirt, trousers and block bodice;
c. Reproduce patterns from standard blocks / commercial patterns;
d. Arrange patterns for a range of styles;
e. Reproduce patterns from a master block to varied sizes.

Skills

a. Compute body measurements from size charts;
b. Illustrate patterns for a pencil skirt, trousers, block bodice and sleeve;
c. Modify patterns from standard blocks to a range of skirts and trousers styles;
d. Modify patterns from standard blocks to a range of bodice and sleeves styles;
e. Modify patterns from a master block to varied sizes.

 

Assessment Methods
